Rory is one of the lead General Practitioners involved in the development of The Medical Centre. He has been working as a GP in Kenmare since 1988 when he took over the practice of Dr Paddy Quinlan
Initially based in a small premises in Henry St., Rory and his GP wife moved into a larger building in 1991 as the practice grew. Both Rory and his wife Bernie worked in No. 1 Coffey’s Row for several years. They then took on a new partner, Dr. Aideen Russell in 2005. As the practice grew and relationships grew between the other GPs in the town, Rory decided to try and realise a dream. This dream was to build a new Medical Centre with all GPs in the area participating and working together, sharing resources and expertise for the benefit of the patients and the GP’s alike. This project came to fruition in November 2008 when the Medical Centre was opened. The rest is history, as they say.
After moving to the Medical Centre, the GPs there opened discussions with the local Health Services Executive (HSE) officials to see if we could together build a team of Primary Care professionals working from the same building such that we could deliver better and more coordinated care to all the people of the greater Kenmare area. Thanks to a common vision and much hard work, this vision was realised in July 2012 when the Primary Care Centre was opened. This comprises both the Medical Centre containing the General practice Team, and the HSE centre containing the Multi- disciplinary team of Community care workers. An so was born the Primary Care Team in Kenmare.
Each member of the primary Care Team works, each with his or her own area of expertise, for the better delivery of medical care and other services to the Local community. The proximity of the working environment ensures that Primary Care professionals of all sorts meet informally every day and formally on a regularly basis.
Rory qualified from University College Cork with a Bachelor of Medicine in 1977. After doing his internship in Tralee General Hospital, he started his GP training. He started with an Obstetrics rotation in Tralee, the moved to Cork Regional Hospital (now known as Cork University Hospital) to work in Paediatrics. From there Rory went to Rugby in Warwickshire and later York city to complete his GP training. He was admitted as a member of the Royal College of General practitioners in the UK through examination.
Rory returned to Ireland in 1982 with his wife and now three young children. Both rory and Bernie continued to work together in General practice in Buncrana Co. Donegal for 6 years. In 1988 the opportunity to work in Kenmare arose and after much deliberation, Both Rory and Bernie decided to move to Kenmare.
Rory believes that general practice, by definition, means having a broad general medical Knowledge that encompasses the entire life span, from the cradle to the grave. As GPs we acknowledge the privilege we enjoy in trying to help serve the medical needs of our community. We do not pretend to know everything but we work with our patients to try and improve all our lives.
Rory has a special interest in Medical technology and was instrumental, with colleagues throughout the Country in bringing the Electronic Patient Record to General practitioners in Ireland.
Rory’s other passion in the Bike. He believes that Kenmare is a cyclists heaven.
